MOVIES/SUPERHEROES – Captain America 3 vs. The Man of Steel Sequel
In 2016 Captain America 3 will come out the same day as the Man of Steel sequel.
The question is, which one of these two movies will do better that weekend?
There’s no way of knowing, of course. All we can do is speculate. That said, I’ve made a bet at work on which movie will do better.
But before I get into that let’s take a look at what each movie has going for it.
What Captain America 3 Brings to the Table
The Pros
Captain America 2 is one of best live action superhero movies ever made. It’s arguably THE best superhero movie. Captain America as a mainstream character has earned a huge reputation because of Cap 2.
The TV show Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. keeps you involved in the Marvel Universe while you wait for the next feature, and it ties in nicely to Cap. 2.
By the time Cap.3 comes out, Avengers 2 would have also come out. Depending on how well that movie is received, Capt 3 will have some great momentum.
Marvel has a good stuff together when it comes to their superhero movies and is building a solid brand.
The Cons
Cap. 2 was so good, it’s got a LOT to live up to. And if Avengers 2 is good, it’s even got MORE to live up to. It’s possible that if the story is good but not fantastic, it’s going to get bad word of mouth because of over hyped expectations. This is, what happened to Dark Knight Rises.
What Man of Steel 2 (Superman vs. Batman) Brings to the Table
The Pros
It’s going to have Batman in it. He’s arguably the most popular mainstream Superhero in the world.
It’s going to have Diana Prince and possibly have her dresses in her alter ego, Wonder Woman. This would be the first time she has ever been in a feature film. That’s a big deal. Who doesn’t want to see that?
The potential of this movie being a set up for a Justice League movie, gives this movie a high curiosity factor.
And if it’s story is more solid than Man of Steel‘s, it’s going to get great word of mouth.
The Cons
The first Man of Steel movie was very divisive. It had plot holes and some people didn’t like the take on Superman. Warner’s doesn’t really seem to have a solid plan with their Superhero movies. They’re hit or miss which doesn’t give people too much confidence in their movie brand. Also, many people don’t like the idea of Ben Affleck playing Batman.
My Bet
Last week I was having a conversation about the latest Superhero movies with a director friend of mine.
The conversation eventually turned to Cap 3 and the Man of Steel sequel.
We started talking about the potential pros and cons of each movie. Then my friend asked me which one of these movies would “win.”
“I think it’s going to be Superman vs. Batman,. It’s got Batman in it. Ben Affleck or no, I think more people have more invested in Batman then Cap.”
My friend thought Cap. 3 would win, because Cap 2 was so spectacularly good. So he said,
“Bet you five buck Cap. 3 wins.”
“Ha ha ha, alright, I’ll take that bet,” so we shook on it, “We’ll find out in two years who’s right.”
The winning movie is the movie that makes the most money out of the two, once it leaves most theaters. We’ll see which movie does better.
What Do You Think?
Which movie do you think will do better?
Why do you think so?
Did I bet on the right “horse?”

Smart to place the bet for when it leaves most theaters instead of opening weekend. I will flying to wherever my husband is so that we can watch both on the same night. Smart theaters will offer them as a double feature or offset their show times so you can see both. That being said, Marvel has a done an impressive job with superhero movies and I feel like they are rewriting the play book for years to come. The avenger movie (Loki pokey stick and all) gave us this wonderful opportunity to see a whole bunch of superheroes working together which I haven’t seen outside of a cartoon in my whole life. Cap 2 was incredible. I haven’t been so invested in a character in a while and I was an Iron Man fanatic after his first movie. Cap 2 has plot and stuff blows up. It is wonderful. I think they could do at least that well if not better for Captain 3. If you look back at Thor 1 and compare it to the current marvel movies, there is leaps and bounds different. The expectation is that they can only improve. As for Superman, I also feel that they can only get better from the last movie. I am uncertain that bringing in Batman was a good idea. Every actor portrays a batman differently, bringing in an I introduced batman is dangerous. It could derail a good script. For me to really enjoy superman 2 I would want to see a big difference between superman and Clark Kent. I feel like they cast the actor because he fit the role and I was left wanting. A sense of some kind of relatable ness would have been nice. So I am voting captain3 not because I won’t go see both (possibly 3 times) but because I don’t think DC has the cinematic experience. Marvel has been practicing this with regular releases, and practice makes you better.
Bec
I agree. With Marvel making so many movies, practice makes perfect. Although, Ironman 2 and 3 though they did great, weren’t said to be better than first. Thor was an okay movie, and the sequel was better but it wasn’t great. The first Captain America movie had an awesome Act 1 and Act 2 but Act 3 kinda fell apart. It wasn’t till Avengers that the Marvel movies really blew everyone away, and again, Thor: The Dark World, which came after, was pretty good but no where near as good as Avenger and Cap. 2.
That said, there are so many of them, that some people may tire of them. I know I personally won’t, but I’ve heard people complain that it’s too many.
Go figure.
I think Warners is waiting til the Man of Steel sequel is in production to start talking about it. The moment they do, the first thing they’re going to reveal is Batman in his new suit. If it’s as cool as Kevin Smith and Jennifer Garner says, that may win people over and get them really fired up.
Although, I too am afraid Batman will upstage Superman in his own movie. Still, who wouldn’t want to see Wonder Woman on the big screen?
