ART/VIDEOS – How to Draw Free Hand Boxes and Cubes

One of the most important things you should be able to do when drawing is drawing cubes or boxes free hand.  In what ever position you want, at will.

Seeing the direction in space that boxes fall into is easy because they have sides.  You can see when you’re looking directly at them, or underneath them.  Pretty much any direction they’re in can clearly be seen.  This is not always the case with other 3d shapes.

The advantage is that if you need to figure out what other shapes may be doing spatially, you can make them a bit “boxy” by adding corners to them, like a box.  This is just for you to check to see what a shape is doing.

However, if you don’t know how to draw boxes in the first place, this is not going to be helpful at all.  For this reason, drawing boxes is something you need to know how to do. Especially free hand.

In this video I go over the basic of drawing free hand boxes by going over someone else’s box drawing.  That way if you’re making the same mistakes he is, you can fix them yourself. And if you haven’t learned to draw them yet, this video is full of tips and tricks on how to make them work.

ART/VIDEOS – The reason Drawing Can Be Frustrating and How to Get Past It

More than any other reason, I think that people give up on drawing because the results of their drawing is not what they had in mind.  Drawing can be extremely frustrating for this reason.

As someone who deals with this kind of frustration to this day, I can tell you where that frustration is coming from and what it actually is.  Once you understand it, it’s not only easier to deal with but you can work with it to help you improve.

In this video, I talk about what this frustration is.  Why it will never go away.  How to live with it and get better at drawing in spite of the feeling being there.

ART/VIDEO – Copying and Studying Cartoon Characters

What’s the different between studying a figure from a photo and studying a drawing for cartoon character?  Nothing.

When studying both you do exactly the same thing with both:

1. Look at the overall shape the character makes
2. Look at the gesture
3. Look at the negative spaces
4. Measure everything (space and place)
5. Find the volume of the forms LAST.  Don’t worry about it until 1- 4 are worked out.

ART/VIDEOS – Perspective Made Really Simple

Perspective can be confusing and frustrating.  Anything that can help make it faster and easier to do can come in handy.  Over the years of working in animation as a character Layout Artist, I figured out a way to make perspective faster and easier for me to handle so I could get my work done.

My pal Arron D’Errico was reading my lesson on perspective over at The Drawing Website and asked me it I could expand on the Perspective Tips section of my grid tip.

The grid I talk about is the what I used at work to get my job done faster. In this week’s video I try my best to explain how to make the grid and how to use the grid so that if you wish to use it too, you can.

ART/VIDEOS – Drawing the Body Bullet in Dynamic Poses

In a lesson I wrote about drawing bodies, I wrote about two different body formulas I use.  One of those is what I dubbed The Bullet.

I got it from my figure drawing teacher Steve Huston.  I’ve found it very useful over the years.

I was asked by a Youtube video viewer if I could show examples of this formula in action.  Examples of what this formula looks like in dynamic poses.

This is the second cartoon drawing tips.  In this video I go over a slightly more complicated cartoon character, namely Shaggy from Scooby Doo.

I go over forms and solidity, as well as check the perspective of the character and the positioning of body parts in space.  I try to clarify how forms turn in space and how you can work that out as you break down the characters.

And of course, I mention how mastering the fundamentals are key to getting everything to work well. I hope you get a lot out of it these tips:

ART/VIDEOS – Cartoon Drawing Tips 01

Breaking down a character can be trickier than you think. If you don’t have your fundamentals down.

This week go over a viewer’s break down drawing of Bug Bunny. He asked me to do so.  He was wondering why his drawing wasn’t turning out the way he wanted.

I not only give him pointers but I talk about the specific drawing fundamentals he’s lacking, why they’re important to know and how he can learn to fix them.

If you’ve tried to break down a cartoon character and it didn’t go so well, it’s possible, you may be doing the same things.  Watch the video to get the pointers to do better next time.
