ART – The Story of a Digital Painting of an Orange
I’m taking a small break from the superhero drawing to brush up and build up some skill in a different form of art. I’m working on my painting.
Earlier in the week, I tried doing something a bit complicated. I tried painting a face. Problem was that I wasn’t accustomed to painting opaque. I didn’t have a method to approach the painting. As I worked on the painting I slowly discovered it.
That said, the painting was a failure and I ended up abandoning it. Fortunately I had learned a lot from doing it so I decided to give it another go. This time though, I thought I’d do something a bit less complex. I needed something much more basic.
I had an orange next to me at my desk. I put a light on it and decided to paint it.
It was crazy hard to do. I was shocked how difficult it was. I just don’t have the experience with painting to draw upon. There are so many painting problem I’ve never solved. Every brush stroke was a new experience.
I managed to paint it though and it looks pretty descent. So I’ll give painting another try and see what happens.
What do you think?
On-Topic:I think it turned out really well.
Off-Topic:I have a question for you that might help others too.
I am 16 years old and i am a begginer. I drew a lot when i was little, last time drawing a full piece of work at around 12 years old and it turned out decent for my age. My problem was that i got very easily discouraged by myself, thinking that everybody who saw my paintings/drawings would say they are good only not to dissapoint me.
For a number of months really i have been trying to make a habit of practicing drawing and painting regurarly but i didnt succeed. I always document a lot then procrastinate, then fear of failure kicks in and i do nothing.
And on the days i really do something, i feel really nervous if people are around me and i think that if someone comes they might see what i do.
I am conscious of this problem and if you can share some tips or life stories with me it would be of tremendous help.
If you’re drawing or painting in public then, yes, people will look at what you do. Will they judge it? Yup. But, really, what does it matter?
Unless they’re successful professionals, it’s not like they could do better.
You never really get over this kind of self conscious feeling when drawing in public or showing your work publicly. You just have to get used to it.
I’m very introverted and when I first started out, I went to the Zoo to sketch animals a lot. When you do this, you’re just as much an attraction as the animals. Man, did I hate it. But I did it anyway because it wasn’t about those people, it was about my skills. It was about getting better at drawing. So you kinda have to suck it up.
As for getting motivated or talking yourself out of it because you think you might fail…
I “fail” quite a lot. I put the word “fail” in quotes because the only way to truly fail is to give up. And even that is not really failing because it just means you stopped. You can easily start again anytime.
If you want to see me “failing,” I’ve written about it here on the blog, many times. Then you can see what I do with my “failures.” But before I provide links to these posts, here’s a link to a post by my pal Chris Oatley, that might help you out called, “Why Giving Up Won’t Solve Your Problem:
